The communication trench was very narrow, only one person wide. When two soldiers were on the path coming from two different directions, they would eventually meet and neither could continue going in their intended direction. To solve this issue passing points were made throughout the communication trenches. Passing point was a little alcove along the communication trench so that if two were coming on the communication path at same time one could step in passing point letting the other through.
