During World War I the Germans built custom built gun holes on the fire bay. These holes allowed soldiers to fire at the enemy without being exposed. Later in the war, the Germans modified these gun holes for increased protection. The modified gun holes were made out of sandbags stacked in a formation with a small hole allowing room for a firearm.
