Every soldier during World War One carried equipment on their backs when they entered no mans land. Some of the items that were carried were entrenching tools. They carried these so that if the enemy began attacking they could quickly make a mini trench for protection. These mini trenches were nothing more than a little ground dug up to make a wall.
