In the back of the frontline tench were dugouts. These dugouts housed the soldiers when they were off duty. There was only room to be curled up in a ball while sleeping. Soldiers had be careful not expose any of their limbs during the night because they could not be seen and there was possibility that soldiers on duty could trip on them. The Germans embellished the dugouts with shutters so that they soldiers could feel more at home.
