The German trenches that were built during World War I were made to be the borders of their territory. Because the German trenches were meant to be permanent Germany believed that they should make their trenches comfortable and luxurious. One aspect of this was the doormats that stood outside the entrances of the trench for the soldiers to wipe their boots on. Another luxurious element in the German trenches was the electricity. Lamps were placed in deeper parts of the trench and in the officer quarters.
