During World War I protection was critical, to increase protection the Germans stacked sandbags inside the front line trench. Sandbags created covers during harsh weather, but it also concealed soldiers from the enemy. Later in the war, the Germans modified their gun holes and placed the sandbags in formations so that the soldiers were ensured more protection, while being able to fire at the enemy.
